As someone who’s been lucky enough to explore Rome multiple times, I’m thrilled to share my experiences and tips to help you make the most of your visit.
There’s something magical about Rome. The moment I stepped into this city, I felt as if I had traveled back in time. The streets, the architecture, and the very air seem to whisper stories of emperors, artists, and ancient gods. From my first visit, I was captivated by the way ancient ruins blend seamlessly into the fabric of everyday life. Rome is not just a city; it’s an experience, a feeling that stays with you.
As a seasoned traveler, I’m excited to share with you my personal guide to experiencing Rome, a city that never ceases to amaze.

Rome Travel Guide: Things to Do and See
When in Rome, you’re walking in the footsteps of history. My first stop is always the Colosseum. Standing inside this iconic amphitheater, I imagine the roar of the crowds and the epic gladiator battles of the past. It’s a humbling experience, one that connects you to the heart of ancient Rome.

A short walk from the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, a sprawling ruin that was once the center of Roman public life. As I wander among the ancient temples and basilicas, I can’t help but feel the weight of history around me.

But Rome isn’t just about ancient ruins. The city is a living, breathing museum of art and culture. The Vatican City, with its awe-inspiring St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, is a testament to the city’s religious and artistic heritage. The intricate frescoes of Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling left me speechless – it’s a masterpiece that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

And tell me who hasn’t fallen in love with the beauty of the Trevi fountain! As the saying goes, if you throw a coin in the fountain it will guarantee your return to the Eternal City. Of course, I did throw a coin or two, hence I managed to visit Rome a few times.
All about Italian Food
Let’s talk about food – one of my favorite parts of any trip! Roman cuisine is all about simplicity and flavor. For budget bites, I often find myself at a local trattoria, where dishes like carbonara and amatriciana are made to perfection. A must-try is the supplì, a delicious fried rice ball that’s a Roman street food staple.
Mid-range dining in Rome can be a delightful experience. One of my personal favorites is a cozy little restaurant tucked away in Trastevere, where the pasta is handmade and the wine selection is excellent. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely dinner after a day of exploring.
For a luxury meal, I recommend a restaurant with a view of the Roman skyline. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a gourmet Italian dinner as the sun sets over the Eternal City.
Have Fun Rome Activities
Rome is a city that you can explore at your own pace, and there’s no shortage of activities, whether you’re looking to spend or save. Walking tours are a great way to get to know the city. I’ve discovered hidden gems and learned fascinating stories from local guides.
For those who love art, Rome’s galleries and museums are treasure troves. The Borghese Gallery, with its collection of Caravaggio and Bernini masterpieces, is a highlight for me.

Rome Travel Guide: How to Get Around Rome?
Rome’s public transportation system is efficient and easy to navigate. The metro is my go-to for quick trips to major attractions around the four corners of the city. For a more scenic route, I hop on a bus or take a stroll through the city’s picturesque streets.
Rome is incredibly walkable, and sometimes the best way to discover its hidden corners is on foot. Walking around the central touristic streets and districts in Rome would probably be your best option and my favourite one!
Renting a scooter or a bike can be a fun way to zip around, especially in less crowded areas. It gives you a sense of freedom and a different perspective of the city. But be prepared for Rome’s notorious traffic!
When exploring beyond the city, I often take the train. Italy’s rail network is extensive and offers a comfortable and scenic journey to nearby towns and other major cities.
Rome Travel Guide: When to Go and Itineraries:
Each season in Rome has its own charm. Winter brings fewer tourists and a chance to see Rome in a different light, with cozy cafes and Christmas markets. I love the festive atmosphere during this time.
Spring is my favorite time to visit. The weather is perfect for sightseeing, and the city bursts into bloom. Easter in Rome is a unique experience, especially with the Vatican’s celebrations.
Summer in Rome can be hot and crowded, but it also brings a lively atmosphere. Outdoor cafes, gelato, and late-night strolls make it worth braving the heat.
Autumn is a great time to visit, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. It’s also when many cultural events take place, making it ideal for experiencing Rome’s contemporary side.
