Getting my UK citizenship and becoming a British passport holder are some of the highlights of my life here in the UK.  Being a British citizen for half-a-decade now, it did open a lot of options and flexibility for me to travel the majority of the countries in the world.

The British passport is arguably one of the strongest passports in the whole world.

How strong, you ask? Strong enough to access 185 countries without the need of a visa prior to the trip.

Complete List of UK Passport Visa Free Countries to Visit 2019

My british citizenship

According to the Henley Passport Index that published its 2019 report recently, United Kingdom ranks 6th in the most powerful passports out there, sharing the ranking with other countries such as the United States, Switzerland and Norway. (Japan takes the top spot, with 190 countries in the bag.) This is definitely good news (to me! and) to the whole British community who are undeniably fond of travelling across continents.

Let’s be honest here: visas are a pain in our passports most times. The documents, the struggles, the hassles… The anticipation, the rejection, the money involved… If we had it our way, we might have done away with this requirement. However, for security purposes, many countries impose the need to obtain visas in order to control who travels in and out of their territories. It is a necessary piece of requirement that, at the end of the day, only aims for the good of the community.

So, when and how does a passport become stronger than another? It has a lot to do with the political and economic standing of the country.

Governments have treaties and agreements between themselves which allow each country’s passport-holding citizens to travel with much ease across each other’s territories. Essentially, other countries will be willing to grant entry to these strong passport holders with the hopes that, because they belong to a flourishing and/or influential country, they will contribute to the stimulation of the destination’s economy, be it in business or through tourism.
