Turkey is the country that connects Asia and Europe, divided by the mighty Bosporus strait that has seen a great amount of history that shaped the modern world. Visiting the country would require most nationalities to apply for Turkish visa prior to arrival in Turkey.

On my last visit to Istanbul for a travel blogger’s conference, I had to apply for a Turkish visa online.  I would like to share with you the process that I took to apply for the Turkish e-visa using my UK Passport.

What is an e-visa?

An Electronic Visa (e-visa) is a convenient and effective way of securing visas for one country.

You can typically apply for the visa online, as long as your circumstances and nationality will fit the qualified people who can apply for visas this way.

Do I need a visa to travel to Turkey?

It depends on your nationality, but most nationalities require you to secure a Turkish e-visa before arrival in any of the Turkish airports and land borders.

It’s always best to check and make research prior to your visit to Turkey.

The Turkish e-visa is only valid for tourism and trade purposes.

Here are some details on how to get a Turkish evisa using a UK Passport.

I personally have done this process myself when I visited Turkey using my UK passport.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Turkey

Yes, British Citizens are required to get an evisa prior to travel dates.  Securing an evisa is a very straightforward application process.

One great advantage of applying for the e-visa to Turkey is you can apply anywhere in the world as long as you have access to the internet.

Turkey visa requirements

Here are the requirements needed to secure your evisa for Turkey:

  • Passport (Valid at least 6 months on arrival to Turkey)
  • A Valid debit or credit card for visa payment

If you would like to apply for a Multiple Entry Turkish visa, you have to make sure that you have stated this on your application.

You can also apply for a Turkish evisa for your friends or travel companions as long as you know their passport details in order to make sure there will be no errors on the evisa details.

If you have made an error on your evisa, you have to make a new application.  All the details on your e-visa should match the details on your travel documents. Otherwise, this will be considered as an invalid visa and you won’t be able to use it at the border.

Turkish e-visa validity

The Turkish visa is valid for up to 90 days to stay within 180 days of your first entry date in Turkey.

If you have the Multiple Entry Turkish visa, this would mean that your visa would still be valid until the date of visa expiration stated on your visa (within 180 days period).

Otherwise, you have to apply for another Turkish e-visa application.

Where to apply for a Turkish visa

Apply online:  You can obtain evisa for Turkey here.

Just put in your details and the travel dates required for your trip.

In rare cases, if your e-visa to Turkey can’t be processed online through the Electronic visa system you have to visit the nearest Turkish Embassy.

Turkey e-visa processing time

The Turkish visa can be processed from 12 to 24 hours from the time of your application. It will be directly delivered to your inbox and all you have to do is print it ready for your departure.

Always make sure to bring a printed copy and keep a softcopy of the visa on your email, laptop or mobile devices.

It is advisable to secure your e-visa at least 48 hours before your intend to travel to Turkey.

The Turkish e-visa varies from each country and nationality. Always check it before you apply.

Can I get a visa for turkey at the airport

No, All visas should all be processed prior to your arrival to Turkey.

Do I need a Turkish visa if I’m a cruise ship passenger?

No, you wouldn’t need a Turkish visa if you arrived in Turkey via a seaport. As part of this condition, that you can only stay for 72 hours for tourism purposes visiting the nearby city and provinces of that port.

However, if you are joining a cruise ship and arrive in Turkey via land border or airport, you must obtain a Turkish visa.

Do I need a Turkish visa when transiting to Turkey for a connecting flight?

No, you won’t need a transit visa to Turkey if you are only catching your connecting flight and will be staying in the airport’s International Transit area.
