Do I need travel Insurance? What is the best travel insurance to buy?

The million dollar question that I’ve been asked countless times by my blog readers and friends who are planning a holiday is, “Do I really need travel insurance?”

The answer to this question is always a big fat YES!

YES,  you need travel insurance every time you go travelling whether locally or internationally. Trust me, I have thanked my lucky stars that I had my travel insurance when things didn’t go as planned.

Do I need Travel Insurance? Yes, You Must And Here’s Why

Since my days working as a travel agent, I always recommend to my clients/passengers to buy travel insurance for their trip.  It is part of good travel planning and just plainly being wise. You never know what may happen when you are on holiday

It’s better to be safe than sorry for not having one when you most need it!

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance that mainly covers you for any mishaps when you travel.  Whether it is a medical emergency or travel disruption, travel insurance is the traveller’s safety net when things go wrong.

How to choose the best travel insurance

Is travel insurance worth it?

The short answer is YES!  In my opinion, it is absolutely worth having for any travellers, whether for short or long term travel or for local and international trips.

A great example of reliable international travel medical insurance is SafetyWing. It is customised for travellers, digital nomads, entrepreneurs and expats, offering coverages for travel medical issues and other travel-related mishaps. It is also great value for money, starting from US$37 for 4 weeks it gives you worldwide travel medical coverage. You can even buy SafetyWing insurance even if you are already outside of your home country!

Most budget travellers think that having travel insurance is a waste of money! This is absolutely not true. Most of my travels are on a budget, so it is vital to make sure something will have my back in case things don’t go as planned.

Still not convinced yet? Let me share with you some travel experiences that my husband and I had during some trips where we have had some medical problems and unfortunate events.

During our trip to the Philippines, we were coming home late at night from a flight. A couple of men mugged us and took our belongings. We were concerned with our safety and just surrendered whatever they wanted.  The following morning, we went to the police station to make sure that we had this reported and had a police report for our travel insurance.

Another time when we had to use our travel insurance was when my husband fell ill on our way to Bruges.  We had to go to A&E to seek medical attention and eventually we had to curtail the trip altogether.

Without our travel insurance cover, it would have been much more difficult to bear the financial and emotional stress that these events caused.

Still not convinced yet? Here’s another reason to get travel insurance.

Travel insurance is one of the main requirements when applying for a visa like the Schengen visa, UK Visitors Visa or the US Tourist visas. Some passport holders are required to have a visa prior to their trip to specific countries like the UK, USA and Schengen countries.

It is required by these countries from all travellers applying for a tourist visa to have sufficient medical and expatriation cover in case of medical emergency and death. You need to check the various travel insurance visa requirements for how much coverage you might need.

Failure to provide travel insurance as a part of your visa application will cause it to be automatically refused.  The UK, USA and Schengen countries want to make sure that you will not be a burden to their public funds in case things don’t go as planned.

These travel insurance requirements are also required if you are planning to stay or to apply for a long term settlement visa.

How much is travel insurance? How do I choose travel insurance?

Travel insurances come in different prices depending on your personal circumstances, amount of coverage, duration of coverage and travel destinations.

You can check the SafetyWing pricing guides here depending on your age range.  It is very flexible on date range so you can pick depending on your travel dates and can truly save money while ensuring you have enough travel insurance coverage for the whole trip. Alternatively, you can have it as a continuous subscription that runs and renews every 4 weeks.

SafetyWing also provides cover for infants (as long as they are accompanied by an adult who is registered in the policy) and travel insurance for the over 60’s.

When should you buy travel insurance?

Buying travel insurance should be top on your travel essentials listMake it a habit to buy travel insurance whether you are travelling locally or internationally.

Do not try to save money by cutting out travel insurance. It is something handy to have even if you hope not to use it.  Better to have enough coverage than be sorry!

Do you have to declare medical conditions for travel insurance?

Yes, it is vital to declare all your medical conditions to your travel insurance provider to ensure you do not breach the terms & conditions of your policy. As part of the sign– up process, your travel insurance will typically ask you about the general state of your health.

What are the things that I need in case I need to claim with my travel insurance?

In case you need to file a claim with your travel insurance, you must make sure to keep all of your documents (as in everything), including bills, police reports, prescriptions, medical charges, hotel bookings, flight reservations – including your boarding pass if you have it.

All these documents will serve as your proof and will be used for your travel insurance claim. So keep them safe!

Another suggestion is to start documenting if possible by taking pictures or videos of the incident or injuries if applicable.  This will help you to process your travel insurance claims faster.

I hope that I have helped you in choosing the best travel insurance for your trip!
